Are the form-fill problems as bad in the current version as has been reported for the beta version?

I use 1PW on my iPhone and, until I sold my MacBook a couple months back, used it on OS X. I'm setting up a new Windows 8.1 laptop for an aging, computer-phobic close relative and - based on my past experience - thought 1PW for Windows would be perfect for him. (He has a lot of trouble remembering logins on various web sites.) Several days ago I purchased and installed the current version and IE extension. I've had nothing but trouble since trying to get 1PW to automatically log in to a variety of sites.

(BTW, I'm using Classic Shell because it can look like XP, which the poor dear at least understands.)

A couple days ago I posted a question about how 1PW will go to some web sites and, after filling in the user id and password, then launches Google does a search on whatever is entered in the 1PW record's password field. Usually hitting the IE back button will take it back to the initial web site's page which is still logged in.

So far I've gotten no feedback on this. 1PW issues like this have really brought my little project to a halt.

Desperate, I thought I would show hidden forum topics in case some help was to be found in there. I see that it reveals a lot of 1PW beta issues. One post and its many replies and updates really troubled me. Specifically, it was discussing a whole slew of everyday web sites that 1PW beta was having trouble logging in to ... it appeared that each one of these was entailing custom coding to make work, and with little guarantee that they wouldn't break the next time the web site was revised.

Some of these reports were with the same web sites I was trying to get to auto log in with 1PW for Win ver. 1.x.x.x. Such as Amazon. I'm also seeing either this behavior - or just flat-out not filling in - for the following:

American Express
Comcast
Hershey Medical Center
M&T Bank
MyPilot.com
Navy Federal Credit Union
ShowBuy.com
Zulily.com

There's another dozen or so yet for me to set up, but this has got me stalled right now.

BTW, can someone advise what the correct settings should be for: Scope, Auto=Type, and parameters for Type and Designation? I've tried various combinations with little or no success.

Does Agile Bits read these forums?

Yes, we do, as you can see from the thousands of replies from us. :)

The topic you're referring to is in the forum dedicated to 1Password 4 for Windows, currently in beta development, and pertains to the new browser extensions, also in beta development. As you may know, the whole point of beta programs is to flush out problems with pre-release versions of the software.

1Password 4 for Windows and the compatible extensions are very stable. The problem is that there are millions of web sites developed and maintained by hundreds of thousands of coders using hundreds (if not thousands) of so-called "standards," every one of which presents a different set of challenges to 1Password in its effort to detect, parse, and later fill login forms.

If you can let us know the specific URLs of web pages where 1Password 1 for Windows is having problems, we'll be happy to look into it, in case there's anything we can do to improve its behavior.

If you'd like to work with the much-improved extensions that are being developed for 1Password 4, you can sign up for the beta program here: https://agilebits.com/beta_signups/winnewsletter.html

I thought I mentioned them earlier ... but how about these URLs for openers?

    AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/ap/signin?encoding=UTF8&openid.assoc_handle=usflex&openid.claimed_id=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.identity=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.mode=checkid_setup&openid.ns=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0&openid.ns.pape=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fextensions%2Fpape%2F1.0&openid.pape.max_auth_age=0&openid.return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fyourstore%2Fhome%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%3Dgno_custrec_signin

    AMERICAN EXPRESS: https://online.americanexpress.com/myca/logon/us/action/LogonHandler?request_type=LogonHandler&Face=en_US&inav=iNavLnkLog

    M&T BANK: https://onlinebanking.mandtbank.com/SignOn.aspx

    NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION: https://www.navyfederal.org/nfoaa-signin.php

I'm still interested in discussion of my other two issues:

    1. Do each of these web sites that fail require custom code to fix, and is that fragile enough to break again when the site updates?

    2. What should be the normal settings/combinations for: Scope, Auto-Type, Type and Designation?

Since I purchased 1PW for Win for my family based on certain expectations for smooth operation - such as I readily acknowledge for iOS and OS X - this would suggest that I am somewhat familiar with 1PW and entitled to raise such problems now without too much defensiveness from Agile Bits.

I apologize for the slow reply. I have been trying to reproduce this problem you're having. So far, I haven't had a lot of success.

Our beta version does have a few issues with certain web sites. This is why it is called a beta. However, these problems are mostly with Chrome and Firefox right now. Our extension for IE seems to work on 90% of the web sites out there. For the remaining 10% we have this fallback-mechanism called Auto-Type. Auto-Type will almost always work, bringing our IE extension to a high success rate.

What should be the normal settings/combinations for: Scope, Auto-Type, Type and Designation?

    1. Scope: ON (otherwise, you won't be seeing this login item in your web browser).
    2. AutoType: OFF, unless our extension is not filling this login item in your web browser. In that case, please turn it ON and try again.
    3. Type and Designation: these (web form) details are created automatically by our auto-save feature. In an ideal world, you should never need to touch these. Basically, Type and Designation are telling our extension how and where to fill those web form fields.

@oharamj, whatever it was in my reply that sounded defensive, I apologize—I certainly didn't feel defensive, and I'm truly sorry if it sounded like I did.

I'm sure I didn't write anything implying that you weren't entitled to raise issues with the software. That's the purpose of these forums and the justification for my efforts and those of my colleagues, here. :)

I hope you'll continue to help us make 1Password the best tool it can be!

    All right, no worries.

I unchecked Auto-Type. When that didn't help, I deleted my 1PW entry for amazon.com. Then I completely uninstalled and re-installed 1PW for Win current version. Also recreated 1PW Amazon login entry by going to amazon.com and letting the add-on add the login entry into 1PW. (Whereas before I was manually creating the 1PW entries, which is how I was used to doing in the Mac versions.) After that I clicked on the 1PW browser add-on, and used that to log-in to Amazon (instead of double-clicking on the Login record in the 1PW desktop window).

That process worked. I'm going to continue on to the other web sites and set them up the same way, and see what happens.

Question: When calling up the 1PW add-on dialog box, click on "Go and fill login", why does the first menu category say "Unassigned"?

Other comment: Kinda hard to understand why double-clicking on a login entry in the desktop app doesn't properly handle the web site login process. Isn't that the way the iOS and OS X versions work?

    Hi oharamj,

I haven't had the issues you mention, although I have only ever added passwords by logging into a site and letting 1PW save the details (which saves the details about the form as well as the actual credential). My reason for responding now is to mention that I have no idea what the unassigned menu is but I only ever see it in IE and I basically find 1PW3 works very poorly in IE to the point that I'd be complaining if that was my main browser. I use Chrome with the relevant plugin and find that the user experience is miles better and I only use IE when there's a website that Chrome doesn't play with.

    Hope that helps.

@oharamj, the Unassigned smart folder lists all items that haven't been assigned to a folder you've created.

You can read about folders in the "How do I work with vaults and folders?" article in the "FAQ" section of the user's guide, accessible from the Help menu and in the Support area of our web site.

(Note that the term "vault" has been reassigned in 1Password 4 for Windows, in which Logins, Identities, and the other headings in the upper left quadrant are called "categories.")

@DBrown Hi Dan, I signed up to the beta and unfortunately I don't like the new Chrome Extension at all, it's much more like the IE one in 1PW3 that I was complaining about above and doesn't have any consistency with other Chrome extensions, nor the ease of use of the old extension. Obviously I'm continuing to test, but at this stage it's a reason for me to not upgrade when the new version comes out. I started a new discussion here: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/26099/chrome-extension-feedback#latest but I've had trouble getting screenshots to demonstrate specific concerns.

I just wish I was Dan Brown! :D

Regarding screenshots: Does the "Attach a file" link below the post-editing area work for you?

Regarding "when the new version comes out": 1Password 4 for Windows was released on Tuesday of this week.
