I'm finding this impossible to set up. It isn't intuitive at all. I can't get it to generate a password - all I've got so far is a message telling me it doesn't work with Firefox 5.1.0 when I try to instal browser extensions.

Are you really using Firefox 5? It's a really old version and you do need one of the more recent versions for 1P4 to work with it. The current version of Firefox is version 28 and for me it's perfectly fine and stable so I'm not sure I'd see any reason not to use it.

OK I'll try and update. I just bought a new MacBook Air, presumed the software would be most recent, but clearly not.

You can get the up to date version of Firefox here. Post back if you still have problems. I'm a little concerned something isn't quite right because I can't imagine a new MacBook Air would come with Firefox, let alone such an old version!

Edit: you can check the Firefox version by going to Firefox > About Firefox.
