Why don't unsecured websites work correctly?

I've been going thru my Unsecured Websites one-by-one to update them, but for some reason the "Make https" button does NOT work. For each site I click the "Make https" button and almost always get a dialog box "This website may not support https or could be offline." I can then click on Close, then click on the website URL (which are all "http://..." to open and fill. In almost every case the website opens to an https: prefix with the lock icon (Safari).

At first I thought this might be just for some websites but it's been happening for almost every one. For example, "http://www.amazon.com" tells me the website does not support https yet it clearly does. I can hit "Change anyway" but this is not the way to resolve this issue.

@krgraham - hmmm, I'm not sure why that would be. Is it possible that the URLs you originally saved are not the correct, direct links to the sign-in pages? If so, that could be part of the reason, in some of those cases. The website(s) in question need to be accessible both by http and https at the same sign-in link. Sometimes, one or the other variety aren't available, or the sign-in redirects to a different URL altogether (or sign-in and register have different URLs). But even in the best of circumstances, the "Make HTTPS" button isn't going to work in 100% of cases. When it doesn't, try making sure that

    1. The plain HTTP URL you have saved is still active
    2. The URL is actually to the current sign-in page and not some other page, like a main page or separate registration page (i.e. - test it to make sure it works)
    3. You can manually copy the sign-in URL, add an "S" to the end of HTTP and get to a secure sign-in page

If you find any for which all of these things are true and the "Make HTTPS" still seems not to be working, if you're willing, please send us an email to support@1password.com containing the exact URL you had saved in 1Password, and we'll investigate it. Thanks! :)

Here's a link http://www.instapaper.com/user/login in my account. If I click on this link it takes me to https://... but when I click on Make https it says the website does not support https!

No problem logging in with 1PW, but why do I have to manually change each one?

Thanks for that @krgraham. I apologize for the delay in responding here. We do have an issue open for our development team to investigate why this isn't working for some websites.
