1Pass Stopped Working?

Hi,
I have this version:
1Password
Version 6.8.9 (689000)
Mac App Store

Now, when I click the 1Pass icon in my browser I see:
Read Only Mode. Click Here to Buy.

What is going on?

Thanks,

Mark Douglas

  • Hi @canoe

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble. Do you have a 1Password membership? If not, where did you purchase your 1Password license from? If you purchased from us directly you'd need to download the app from us, rather than from the App Store.

If you do have a membership you should be using 1Password 7, which can either be downloaded from our website or the App Store. I would recommend downloading from our website. 1Password 6 was retired over 2 years ago and hasn't been updated since. 1Password 7 and membership is the way forward.

Please let me know how you purchased so we can help get to the bottom of it. :)

    Hi,
I bought via the App store.

Currently I have 2 vaults. One (Primary) that i keep "normal" pws in, the other for financial pws. My Primary vault is synched to my iCloud account. Thus, my home computer has access to the Primary vault and the financial vault, while my phone, etc. only has access to my Primary vault.

Can I continue this model with v7?

I only want to sync to my iCloud space, not 1Password's servers, does v7 allow for that?

    Thanks so much.

A similar configuration would be possible with 1Password Families membership, but that would mean using 1Password.com instead of iCloud. Would you mind elaborating about your hesitation to move forward with that arrangement? Membership and 1Password.com is the way forward for 1Password. We'd be happy to discuss any concerns.

As for the licensing issue with the App Store... there are only a few things that come to mind that could cause such an issue:

    1. You purchased 1Password on a different Apple ID than you are currently signed into
    2. You've changed App Store regions
    3. You're signed into a 1Password membership that you haven't paid for
    4. You actually bought 1Password from us, not Apple
    5. You've installed 1Password 7 but are only licensed for 1Password 6

If none of those seem to line up with what you're seeing then I'd like to get you in touch with our licensing specialists so they can dig deeper. To facilitate that please email us at support+forum@1password.com and in the body of your message include a link to this thread: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/114332/1pass-stopped-working#latest. When you email in you should get an automated reply from BitBot with a support ID. Please post that here so we can route your message appropriately. Thanks!

    Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Last thing first:

“As for the licensing issue with the App Store…”
It seems to have resolved itself. Now when I select the 1P icon in my browser (Firefox) the “Read Only Mode. Click Here to Buy.” message is gone and I’m back to normal.

I looked at the extension (4.7.5.90) and it was set to do an auto update. I’m guessing maybe it tried to do that, saw that my desktop version was 6.8.9 and had a brain fart. Now, however, the extension has reverted(?) to its previous form and is happy to work with a desktop version of 6.8.9.

    As to moving to v7:

When I bought 1P it was a standalone cost, there was no “membership” -ie, endless license fees. Now I understand the desire for software companies to go this Adobe-Endless-Fees route, after all, market saturation is a real thing.

I’m told that to keep the same security model that I have used for years I need to spend $60 a year for the Family Plan. As you might guess, I’m less than happy with that. I like being in as much control of my data as possible. I like having my Primary vault stored in my iCloud account and not being dependent upon yet another company. I like having two vaults as 1P originally allowed, one that can be synced the other kept local. Now I have to use 1P's servers and need a Family Plan, ugh.

If 1P v7 allowed my current model to function as is, I seriously consider a yearly $36 fee as reasonable. But, since it, apparently, doesn’t, I won’t be spending $60 a year to duplicate what I currently have for free.

    Thanks so much.

  • That's interesting about the licensing issue. I'm not sure how to explain that, but I am glad to hear it seems to be working as expected now. If it does reoccur, please do drop us an email as outlined above so we can troubleshoot. :)

As for moving forward... It sounds like the primary concern might be the cost. To be honest I'm not sure how using iCloud for your 1Password data truly gives you any more control or any less reliance on 1Password than using 1Password.com. Either way the software you're using to interact with that data is coming from us. And either way, the data is also stored on your devices, so if either iCloud or 1Password were to suddenly disappear off the face of the Earth you'd still be able to unlock and view/export your data. In that scenario you'd be in a position of having to move to a different service regardless. So, with that said, if cost is indeed the primary barrier, I'd encourage you to reach out to our team via email. There are occassionally promos that we run that we could point out, or other opportunities for savings. I'd hate to see you stick with retired software that is no longer being updated (1Password 6) without at least having the discussion.

We're looking forward to hearing further from you. :+1:
