Membership is the way forward for 1Password. We're intentionally not advertising licenses anymore. There are a whole host of benefits to membership, including access to the latest versions of 1Password for all of your compatible devices. You can read more about that here:
I do agree that the current situation is a source of frustration and confusion. Hopefully we'll be able to address that soon.
I have a license and constantly have to re-enter it. I paid for 1Password for years. Upgraded with each release. Now I'm using Bitwarden :D
