Adding an email account does not allow password generation

On windows, when adding a new email account (in 1Password), you cannot generate a new password. You have to start by adding a new login, generate a password, copy the password, cancel the creation of the login. Then add an email account and paste the password there.

That's just too cumbersome, while the feature does exist on the mac version.

    Akufen, welcome to the forum!

It's a little easier than that: in 1Password, choose File > New Item > Password; set up the password parameters, and click the Copy button; close the Strong Password Generator; click the +Account tool; and paste the copied password in to the Password field.

If you lose the password at any point along the way, you can get it from the New Password item in the Generated Passwords vault.

The windows version doesn't have the "Password" item in that menu.

In any case, it would be equally inconvenient as the way I'm doing it now. What's the reason for the absent "generate password" button in the add account windows?

    Edit: Thanks for the welcome!

Akufen, as documented in the user's guide, you need to enable View > Generated Passwords in order to see the Generated Passwords vault and the Password command on the File > New Item menu.

It's certainly possible that the Generate Password button will appear in more places in the 1Password interface in a future release. It's currently not in the new-account dialog box because, as co-founder Roustem likes to say, "No one has written that code, yet." :D
  • Hah! That makes sense. :)

Ok, thanks for the instructions, that should make life a tad easier.

    I think it will, Akufen.

Thanks again for joining us, here in the forum!

But why do not add "plus" Password button to the bar next to the Identities? Of course if View > Generated Passwords is enabled.

It will be more convenient than make a 3 clicks in menu and more obvious.

    Hi EIKA,

We agree with you, it makes sense to add a “Generate” button to all password fields. Right now, we have a plan to overhaul the interface for 1Password for Windows and once we complete it, it should have what you’re looking for. I do not have a timeframe on this.

    Hi, EIKA.

Mike's right that it makes sense to have a Generate button next to all password fields; but you were asking why there isn't a +Password button on the 1Password tool bar, and that has to do with the "real estate" that would be required. The developer felt (and may still feel) that it's such a seldom used function (outside of Login items, of course) that going through the menu wasn't/isn't a frequent enough inconvenience to warrant extending the size of the window or defining new, smaller icons to make room for another tool.

Also, it's not so much that we plan to overhaul the interface of 1Password for Windows, at least not in the way I interpret that phrase. Remember, work on 1Password for Windows was begun over a year ago, when 1Password 3 was still in beta development, and the decision was made at that time to base the design and features of 1Password for Windows on the current product, 1Password 2. We've moved way beyond that in features, already, but the look and organization are still closely matched to 1Password 2.

Please be assured that we plan to introduce many of the features and much of the look of 1Password 3 in future releases of 1Password for Windows.
