Sync using Dropbox, I continually get an error about Failed to list remote data folder in Dropbox

With the path to the default folder. I get this error on my iPad as well as my iPhone 5s.
In the dropbox ios app it takes a few minutes for the .../default/data folder to list the entries.
In the dropbox Yosemite or El Capitan app it shows 20,951 items in teh data/default directory
