I bought 1Password for Mac 4 in August of 2014. Also run 1Password on iOS 9 (iPhone and iPad). Have purchased a new Mac. Want to install current version of 1Password and sync all devices over iCloud. What are my options for upgrading from Mac version 4 to version 5?

The upgrade from 1P4 to 1P5 is free so all you have to do is to download 1P5 from the place you originally downloaded 1P4. Bear in mind there are two versions of 1P4/1P5—that from the Mac App Store and that from the AgileBits store. The AgileBits store version does not support iCloud to sync your 1P data following changes made by Apple on the launch of OS X Yosemite. Both versions support Dropbox and wifi to sync, of course.

If you originally bought 1P4 from the Mac App Store all you need to ensure is that you're logged on with the same Apple ID you used when you bought 1P4 and you should be offered 1P5 without charge. If you bought 1P4 from the AgileBits store you'll need to download 1P5 from there and your 1P4 licence will license 1P5 (but, of course, you won't be able to use iCloud sync).

    Hi @ppietropaoli,

Stephen's reply is spot-on, I hope it helped! If you bought a 1Password 4/5 license from the AgileBits Store, you can download 1Password 5 from our download site, and then add your license file to activate it. Or if you bought it from the Mac App Store, simply reinstall it from the Purchased section of the Mac App Store (make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to make that purchase).

As Stephen mentioned, iCloud sync is only available in the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac. That's because it uses Apple's CloudKit technology, which can currently only be used by apps sold through Apple's App Store. We'd absolutely love to be able to include that in the AgileBits Store version of 1Password as well, but unfortunately that's not currently possible. We have more information here: * Why does iCloud require iOS 8, OS X 10.10, and the Mac App Store?

Unfortunately Apple doesn't currently provide a way to convert a license for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password to the Mac App Store version. So if you originally purchased a license from the AgileBits Store but now want the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you would need to purchase that separately.

I wanted to mention that Dropbox sync is also a great sync option. It's how many of us here have always synced our 1Password data. 1Password is secure by design and your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so with regard to security there's no difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.

Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to sync secondary vaults, and also share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers (it's not currently possible to share anything between iCloud accounts). And it's the only sync solution that works across all platforms supported by 1Password: Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Hopefully this helps, but if you have more questions or need anything else, just let us know! :)
