New Smart Folder menu Item missing on one iMac

I am running 1Password 6.2.1 from the Mac App Store on my Macs, under El Capitan 10.11.5.

My iMac no longer shows "New Smart Folder" as a menu item under the File menu. It still shows up on my Macbook.

Smart Folders are incredibly useful when merging and checking imported family vaults, to find duplicates, missing tags, etc.

Where did Smart Folders go?

Thanks!

Hmmm... The Smart Folders menu item only shows up if I have one vault open, not All Vaults. That's what was going on. Is that normal?

    Thanks!

    Hi @gadgetfan2014,

Yup, that's entirely normal. All Vaults isn't really a vault, but rather an artificial union of all your vaults, as such it doesn't know which vault you intend for that smart folder to go into.

Once the folder is assigned to a vault, why can't all folders from all vaults then be displayed when All Vaults is selected? My wife and I have a shared vault where we keep household common items, like credit cards, etc. so we don't have to keep duplicates updated. I ususally run with All Vaults, but can't see my folders.

    @dfz,

We are actually moving away from folders in favor of tags. Both 1Password Families and 1Password Teams only have support for tags (not folders). All Vaults is relatively new, but we have created it with the future in mind (tags only). Tags are just as good as folders, but rather than an item being limited to only one folder, an item can have multiple tags.

Once you create a tag by adding it to one item, it will appear in the sidebar. Then you can select all the items you wish to have that tag and drag them onto the tag in the sidebar. This is great for migrating all the items in a folder to a use tags instead. :)

For my usage, I've found it to be a lot more flexible than folders. For example, I have tags for:

    • bills
    • cc
    • health
    • auto
    • insurance

This allows for all sorts of different combinations:

    • If I want to see all my bills, I can look at the items tagged bills.
    • If I want to know which bills are paid with a recurring credit card payment, I can look at all the items tagged bills and cc.
    • If I want to see things like my Membership item for my health insurance, the Login for their website, and also my Membership item for my separate vision insurance, I can look at health items.
    • If i just want to see the health insurance stuff (not Logins) I can do that.
    • I can also view auto insurance. (I'm sure you can guess what that's about.) Or simply insurance which will include both health and auto.

It's super flexible and makes my life a lot easier. I tried to use folders a long time ago but went with tags because they were so much better. I hope you are able to find them as useful as I have over the years. :)

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to provide further assistance!

I was considering tags as an alternative and thought you might suggest that. Thanks, especially for the tip on bulk tagging.
