Which version is which?

Options

Hi, In wanting to trial 1password on my windows laptop I seem to have downloaded more 'varieties' than I can handle or identify. Would someone please guide me through the versions and what works with what?
I've ended up with;
1password 6 beta (6.0.156d) - doesn't seem to be any way to add entries?
1password 4 (4.6.0.604) - can add entries
1password beta (2016.6.403u) (Families???) Again, doesn't seem to be any way to add entries.
and a chrome extension which seems to only tie in with 1password 4

From the pricing page there seems to be only 2 options - 1password families, which I think I've identified but which version is the $64.99 one time purchase? I know I should have paid more attention when downloading but It's now become difficult to evaluate these, firstly not being sure which version I would want (or is available), but also not being able to figure out where I'm going wrong in not being able to add entries to 2 of them. Please answer as If dealing with a technical idiot and you won't be too far wrong.
Andy

    Hi @casey99. I can understand your confusion.
    1Password 4 is an old version, which I personally would delete. The current version of 1 Password is version 6, it is the version that costs $64.99.
    1Password Families is a subscription based version at $5/month per person. Once you purchased a 1 Password Families license, your passwords can be saved in an online database, (You can try for free for 30 days) and each family member can have access to the vaults that you create online.
    In 1Password 6 your passwords are saved in a local database, or you may choose Dropbox — both variations will allow you to synchronise across devices.
    To save and synchronise your passwords in 1Password 6, you should first to go to your settings and choose either the local folder or your Dropbox vault.
    To save a password, go to File/New Item/ and choose what sort of data you wish to save. Once you have the latest browser plugin installed (available at: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions), 1Password will ask if you wish to save the login data that you enter into a site.

    I hope this helps clear the confusion. If you still have questions — ask away, the 1Password staff will be awake soon.
    Cheers,
    Rob

    Thank you for your answer Rob. I've deleted 1 Password 4 and will go and try your instructions with the other 2 versions.
    Thanks,

    @rjh: Thanks! :chuffed:

    @Casey99: I'll just add that 1Password 4 is definitely useful if you'd prefer the standalone 1Password license and local vaults. But if you're going with 1Password Families (or Teams), you'll need to use 1Password 6 (or the web interface) to access your data on Windows. Be sure to let u know if you have any other questions! :)

    Hi,

    I am still confused. I have 1password 6 installed on a Windows 7 machine, using the Chrome browser with the 1password extension. With this combo, the 1password extension in chrome doesn't seem to know about 1password 6. Is there an extension for chrome under Windows 7 that works with 1password 6 for windows?

    Thanks.

    Hey @formula155,

    Did you get the 1Password extension from this page?
    https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions

    You might want to remove the extension you have now and reinstall it from that page.

    Does that help?

    @formula155: Indeed, make sure that you have the latest extension and 1Password 6 beta installed if you want to use 1Password Families/Teams with your browser on Windows 7. Also, if you don't need 1Password 4, it's best to uninstall it to avoid both apps trying to talk to the extensions. I hope this helps! :)

    Hi,

    Removing 1Password 4 definitely helped. However, when I clik on the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar to fill a Password, I now get a message saying No matching items found. I definitely have entries in my vault - I can see them when I launch the 1Password6 desktop app. So it seems like there is still a disconnect between the extension and the app. I went into settings on the app and under the options/Brpwsers integration item clicked the register browser extension helper button - a popup occurred asked if I granted permission, which I did, but that didn't help.

    @formula155: Aha! Thank you for clarifying! Currently the extension support is extremely strict. It will only offer logins that match exactly — no lenient matching.

    It sounds like everything is in order. Perhaps try a different login instead, or modify an existing one. If you're going to a different address than the one listed in the login, 1Password won't offer it to you. But this is something we'll be making more flexible as the extension support matures. Sorry again for the confusion that's been causing you!

    So is the leniency a change with 1Password 6 and the extension - the extension version I am using is the same version as I was using with 1Password4, and that had no issues matching

    @formula155: The app. The extensions are actually rather "dumb" in some ways, as they depend on the app for the data and much of the logic. They're more of a conduit for 1Password to interact with/in the browser, since it isn't possible for apps to do anything to the browser directly, for both security and stability reasons. So this will be something that will improve over the course of the beta as we continue to work on 1Password 6. :)

    Thanks for the clarification on how the app and extension interact.

    So with non-lenient mode, what is it that has to match exactly - the URL, the field name, etc. If I know this I can potentially edit the data in the app to make things work, right?

    Hi @formula155,

    This is a bug in our current algorithm, it's not related to leniency. We're working on an update to fix this soon but for now, you have to match almost every single thing in your browser's address bar, even the directory path (https://a.b.c/d). This isn't feasible if you have a lot of items.

    We recommend using the Browse button workaround for the moment until we can get the update out. Select your Login item in the 1Password 6 beta app and click on the Browse button on top right.

    OK, tried the browse option - the web page opened but the fields in the page were not filled in and I had to copy and paste username, etc - is that the expected behavior?

    Hi @formula155,

    No, it should be filling your data in like it did before with 1Password 4.

    Are you seeing the same issue on all sites?

    I checked a few sites and see three behaviors:
    1) On some sites the browse button is greyed out and I cannot therefore execute the browse
    2) On some sites the button is active, and when I click it the web page opens, but data is not filled in
    3) On some sites the button is active, and when I click it the web page opens and data is filled in.

    Hi @formula155,

    1. This may happen if it doesn't have the https:// protocol in the URL field. In this case, edit the Login items to add https:// to the beginning of the URL and that should fix the problem.
    2. Did it open to take you to the sign-in page correctly or did it open a different page? Can you share a few URLs, so we can test it. If you want to do it privately, please email it to us at support+windowsbeta@agilebits.com.

    Responses as follows:

      • Yes, that was it - putting in http:// or https:// as appropriate solved the issue. I also noticed a site I had where I didn't actually have a URL specified at all - not surprising that that one didn't work ;-)
    1. Example is https://home.personalcapital.com/page/login/goHome, where I had previously selected the save email address option so it is only looking for a password;

    By the way, forgot to ask - I can't seem to delete a prior URL - if I add a url the old url seems to show up in the edit pane on a row without a label in front of it, and it cannot be deleted.

    I'm glad to hear the missing http/https was the reason. We are looking for a better solution such as appending it for you when you ask 1Password to open it in the browser. A feedback to explain why the browse button is grayed out would be helpful as well.

    Example is https://home.personalcapital.com/page/login/goHome, where I had previously selected the save email address option so it is only looking for a password;

    I'm not able to reproduce this. Could you create a new Login item in 1Password 6 Beta, add the URL and add your username/password for the site. See if this one works better than the older one.

    You can't delete the main URL field but you can edit it.

    When you said you added the URL, do you mean you did this: edit the Login item in 1Password 6 Beta app, clear the URL field and then enter the URL before saving it?

    I'm not able to reproduce this yet. It would help to know exactly the steps you're taking to reproduce this.

    OK, recreating a new entry for personal capital worked. Even better, the autofill is now visible the the browser extension icon. Beginning to suspect that the reason I was not seeing fill in options when clicking the extension button was the lack of http/https entries.

    Regarding the second issue, I am not now sure of the exact sequence, and I can't seem to recreate it. I'll repost if I see it again. I still have at least one saved site that has a row with no ID that I can't delete, though.

    That's great, thanks for letting us know. Stay tuned, we should have an update soon to improve the extension filling support.

    Are you able to edit it on your 1Password.com web site via the browser?

    Yes. What I saw is that on the Windows app there was one entry with the tag website and one without a tag at all - that one I could not delete. On the web site both entries were listed with the website tag, and I could delete the one that didn't have a tag in the windows app. Hope this helps.

    Hi @formula155,

    It does, I think I know what the issue is and we'll get it fixed soon.
