Mac Firefox: clicking 1P button opens a new webpage saying "The 1Password extension is ready"

Hi, this is happening with increasing frequency. When I click the 1P button to either unlock 1Password or to fill a login, it launches a new tab & webpage that says the 1Password extension is ready, with a getting started video.

When I click, the extension dropdown shows the login details for the site I was on, even though it's now opened a new page with the "ready" message. I have to close the tab to get back to the site I was trying to log into.

Can you advise? This is now happening every few times I click the button.

Thanks,
B

    Hi @Bmuse,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the extension in Firefox! From your description, it sounds like 1Password mini isn't running when you click the extension icon - in that case, the extension tries to launch mini and connect to it (it opens that new tab to show you the progress and whether or not it's successful). Please check the following setting:

    • Open the main 1Password app and go to 1Password > Preferences in the menubar.
    • Click the General tab.
    • Make sure the option for "Always keep 1Password Mini running" is enabled.

If that option was disabled, that would explain the problem. On the other hand, if that option was already enabled, something else seems to be causing a problem with the connection between the extension and 1Password mini. You can try rebooting your Mac to see if that helps - if not, please let us know, and we'll continue from there. Thanks! :)

Hi Drew, thank you for the reply. I check Preferences, and that option was already enabled.

I've rebooted, but the first time I clicked the icon, it launched the new tab.

Your explanation makes perfect sense -- I hope we can isolate the problem! I'll look forward to further direction from you.

    Hi @Bmuse,

    Thanks for the screenshots!

In Firefox, please go to Firefox > About Firefox in the menubar to see if an update is available. It's probably already up to date, but it's a good idea to check, just in case. The latest stable version of Firefox is currently 50.1.0, so make sure that's what the 'About' window shows.

Assuming Firefox is the latest version, try uninstalling & reinstalling the 1Password extension by following these steps:

    • Open Firefox and go to Tools > Add-Ons.
    • Click the Remove button next to the 1Password extension.
    • Quit Firefox and restart your Mac.
    • After the Mac reboots, open the following link in Firefox: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions
    • Click the big green Install button and follow the steps to complete the installation.

After you install the extension, you should be prompted to authenticate it by confirming the 6-digits codes match, and once you do that you'll see the new tab that tells you the extension is ready to go again (this time, it's expected). After that, try to use the extension again. Does it still open that tab?
