Mac Does Not Recognize Master Password. Recognized on iPhone, Solved with Computer Restart

This is not a question, rather it is a notification. I have the stand alone version with a family license. My long standing master password stopped working on my Mac, giving me a fright. It worked on my 1Password for the iPhone. It was not being mistyped. The caps key was not on, etc. I restarted my computer and it started working. Just letting you know.

1Password Version: 6.8
Extension Version: 4.6.9
OS Version: OS X 10.12.6
Sync Type: iCloud

  • Hi @emiron ,

That sounds like it could have been one of two things:

    1. Something was up with your keyboard not entering something properly, and the restart fixed it.
    2. If you have two versions of 1Password, once from the Mac App Store, and the other from our website, and the wrong one was running, it might be trying to unlock an older set of data you no longer use. Currently. the two versions store 1Password data in different places.

    Regards,
    Kevin

It wouldn't be either of those. I have only 1Password from your website. I also copied the password from an old note in another application and pasted it in the password field of 1Password, and I still got an error that it was the wrong password..

  • Hi @emiron ,

The next time this happens, try clicking on the 1Password icon in the menu bar. Let us know if it fails there as well. If it works there, it was likely a communication error between the main application and 1Password mini.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I did try that. It similarly failed while when I used 1Password mini.

  • Hrmm... That's odd. If it happens again I'd love for you to generate a Diagnostics Report for us by following the instructions here: https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/

The logs that it gathers might have hints about what's going on.

I am having the same problem only the reboot did not fix my MAC problem. I can login to 1Password on my iPhone but cannot log into my MAC after changing my Master password. This is extremely frustrating however I am grateful my iPhone is working. I attempted to open a case via email over the weekend however no one has responded as of yet. I cannot use 1Password on my MAC, a prompt reply would be appreciated.

I am having this same issue! Restarting does not help. I am running MacOS 10.12. I have no issues on my iPhone or iPad.

AgileBits support, what say you? I feel debilitated without my 1P on my MAC!

Further to my previous comment... I used 1Password several years ago and, at my request, my account was deleted. I just realized that with this new installation I have used the same "sign-on address" as I used before. Is that causing the problem? If so, how do I change my "sign-on address?"

Howard, I just restored a previous backup from a week or so ago, all is good now, I just used my old password

Hi @mfrangipane -- sorry for the delayed reply. 1Password doesn't ever change your Master Password arbitrarily, but you may have had an issue with needing to enter your previous Master Password in order for the change to take effect. This post from our blog from 2015 explains how 1Password handles changes to your Master Password. If restoring to a backup from earlier worked for you, then I'd say you're done...assuming you are now using the same Master Password on both devices. Are you?

@howard836 - It's not necessarily the sign-on address you used. To be clear, you just recently installed 1Password for iOS on your iOS devices, and you've added your account details into it, and can successfully view your data, but not on 1Password for Mac? Is that the case?

If so, make sure you've got the most-recent version of 1Password for Mac on your Mac, then with 1Password open but not unlocked, click Help > Troubleshooting > Delete all 1Password Data. This will reset the 1Password data on your Mac, and when you re-launch 1Password, it will be as if you are a new user. Enter your new account details, and you should have the same data as on your iOS devices.

Yes Lars, I am good now after restoring. To be clear I wasn't suggesting that 1P arbitrarily changed my PW, I changed the Master PW myself and entered it twice, I immediately then logged out and tried to log back in with my new password, it did not work.

I have changed my Master Password on my online 1Password account, iPhone and iPad. The new Master Password works fine there. However, the 1Password extension does not recognize the new Master Password on either Safari or Chrome. I must still enter the old Master Password. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the extension in both web browsers; but, I still must enter the old password. I would appreciate your help to fix this. Thank you.

@howard836 - Hmmm, that sounds like you may have multiple apps installed, or multiple vaults. At this point, I'd like to ask you to create some diagnostics reports, one from each of your devices.

    —Mac—
    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/?mac

    —iOS—
    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/?ios

Please add the following code (including the square brackets) to the Subject line of your diagnostics email before sending it:

    [#NBA-91377-275]

This will link your diagnostics to our current discussion. We'll take a look and let you know what we find out.

For anyone else reading, please note: this ID is for @howard836 only. If you’re experiencing the same issue and need help, please ask us for your own ID.
