How does attachments work in secure notes?

Hi,

I just attached a file to a note but from what I see the attached file isn't actually attached at all, but instead linked to the note.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a secure note
2. Attach a file
3. (Back into the terminal/Finder) Move the file away
4. Try to access the attached file from within the 1Password Secure Note

Expected result:
Full access to the attached file

Actual result:
The attached file can't be accessed

Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help :)

    Hi @cig0,

Can you tell me which file you moved away in the Terminal/Finder?

When you add an attachment file, 1Password should do a few things:

    • Encrypt the file as a new copy, and save the encrypted copy on disk (either in our db if it's tiny, or next to the db if bigger)
    • Create the various relationships needed in our db

Once this is done, there should be no dependence on the original file. So if you move/delete the original file a this point it shouldn't matter. But if you were to delete/move the encrypted copy then bad things could happen.

Maybe a video of what you're seeing would help better describe this?

    Hey @rickfillion,

First of all I would like to apologize for the late reply, last months have been a little bit... frantic for me.

You're correct: I checked again, adding (small) text files to an entry, then saving the entry -> removing the original files -> finding the attached files using Reveal in Finder...

I'm not sure what I did wrong last time, as so far attaching small text files works as described -- sorry for the noise :|

    Thanks!

  • No worries, @cig0. :)

    Rick
