Add new member to existing Family Licence

We have an old family licence purchased in 2013. When you look at the licence file in 1password, it states 'this licence can be used by 5 people on as many macs as needed'. We have only ever signed up 4 people and would now like to add a 5th. Please could you clarify how to do this?

Thanks

  • Hey @Markoustic, if you have an old family license you can simply install 1Password on the 5th person's device and enter your license key to register it. One thing to keep in mind is that 1Password licenses are per platform and for a specific version of 1Password - the only caveat here is that both 1Password 5 and 6 were free upgrades to 1Password 4.

So, to clarify, if you purchase a 1Password for Mac license for 1Password 4, then you can install 1Password 6 on their Mac and register it with the same license. 1Password 7 is a paid upgrade, however, so it wouldn't be included in the license you purchased in 2013. You can download 1Password 6 from our downloads page at the bottom under Using an older computer?.

If you'd like to use the latest versions of 1Password and stay up to date, I'd recommend checking out our 1Password Family memberships - you'll get a free 30 day trial so you can see how you like them. There are a ton of additional benefits of a membership over a standalone license as well - they're definitely the best way to use 1Password.

Let us know if you have any more questions!

    Hi Meek,

Thanks for your response. The licence we bought was for 1password 4 and we did get 5 & 6 as free upgrades.

The first thing I tried was installing 1p6 but I can't see where you enter the licence key?

Also, as regards the 'per platform' issue, we all purchased the 1p ios apps when they were paid, and have always been able to use 1p across devices with no issues. How would the 5th member now be able to do the same?

    Thanks

@Markoustic: Sorry for the confusion there. 1Password 4, 5, and 6 don't use license keys, they use a license file. You can download that from your license email.

Regarding others using 1Password for iOS, they'd have to purchase it themselves, unless they're also using your Apple ID (which is not a great idea, security-wise). 1Password is sold per version, per person.
