1Password App for Windows unable to install

Options

We have added a new user to 1Password. They have been able to successfully login on the web page. When they attempt to install the app there is a problem. The app is downloaded to Chrome and we run the exe. During the install there is a message stating that it is best for the app to close programs automatically during the install and we accept that prompt. Then the next dialogue box states that 1Password has closed unexpectedly and asks to send an error report. Can you help identify the issue?

We had this person download and use the app previously, but now are encountering this error trying to reinstall the app.

    Version 7 .Windows.

  • Hi @bwilczewski,

    Thanks for reporting this.

If you're using Windows 7, make sure .NET 4.6.1 or later is installed. If it is not installed, it is possible you'll have to uninstall 1Password, install .NET 4.7.2 from here and then install 1Password again, it should then work.

However, it is possible the issue may be 1Password 7 picking up a very old database and it can't read it. We're trying to add a dialog about that and not have it crash. Please have your new user do this:

    1. First, sign in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com website using Chrome or Firefox.
    2. Click on your account name on the top right to select Get the Apps and keep this page open.
    3. Close 1Password if it is running by right-clicking on the 1Password icon in the notification area to select Exit
    4. Open Windows File Explorer and enter the following in the address bar: %LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password
    5. Rename the data folder to backup-data.
    6. Open 1Password and switch to your web browser with your 1Password.com account. Scroll down to Step 2 and click on the blue button that says Already have the app? Add your account directly.
    7. Unlock 1Password now.

Thank you. I apologize. I meant version 7 for 1Password. We are on Windows 10 Pro. Will the process be the same?

  • Hi @bwilczewski,

In that case, skip the .NET install as it is already included with Windows 10 updates. The rest of the process for the renaming the database is the same for all Windows versions.
