Changed Password not syncing to desktop app

Options

Employee changed her master password and can login through the browser, but not through the Windows desktop app. I have seen other older posts about having to force it to sync by deleting a folder in appdata (Sorry, do not remember the specific folder). This seems like it should be able to sync on its own. Is there something I am missing or is it a known issue?

Thanks

  • Hey, @mmcquillan! This is a known issue in the sense that the Windows app doesn't presently handle this a bit more awkwardly that we'd like. It's something we're aware of and will be addressing in a future update. For now, the Windows app cannot communicate with the server while locked and doesn't automatically check with the server when you enter a Master Password it thinks is incorrect, so you need to first unlock with the old Master Password. You'll then see a red error banner at the bottom of your app. Click it, enter the new one in the sign-in form, and it will unlock with the new Master Password moving forward.

You may not be aware, but we actually don't sync your Master Password at all, we just create the illusion that we do. Both the server and your local database have a key derived from your Master Password and your Secret Key. When you enter your Master Password, your app uses the same process used to generate its key to generate a key from what you entered and your Secret Key. If it matches the key it has, it unlocks and this all happens locally. It only reaches out to the server once its unlocked at which point it checks for any remote changes since its last unlock. On Windows, when you change your Master Password, the app still has that old key and doesn't know about the new one, so it won't unlock with the new Master Password (the key doesn't match). Once unlocked with the old one, however, it reaches out to the server, the server lets it know it has a new key, then your app prompts you to update its key with your new Master Password. On other devices, this process happens behind the scenes as soon as you enter that new Master Password creating the illusion that it synced and we hope to do the same on Windows in the future. :chuffed:
