What is the difference between 1Password and a password protected file?

What makes 1password more secure than a password protected file? If someone had my master password then they have all my passwords?

It depends on how the file is password protected. If you're talking about Excel's security then it is trivial to break.

There is a good overview of 1Password security here in the knowledge base. I think you'll find that it goes rather further than a password protected file. :)

To add to what @Stephen_C already linked to, two of the biggest benefits of 1Password are that it only decrypts the smallest amount of data at a time and it fills that information directly into your browsers. You may want to read my reply to a similar question, @dog64, in this thread:

    1Password vs. Excel Encryption

Even if you are not using an Excel spreadsheet, the benefits of 1Password over a "flat file" of any kind still apply.

I hope that helps. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help!
