On my MacBook Pro both Safari and the Chrome Extensions indicate that the keyboard is in Caps Lock.

The keyboard is not in caps lock. The caps lock light is out and typing produces lower case text.
If I ignore this indicator and just type then the master password is entered and accepted ok.
If I ignore the indicator and hit any key (other than esc, F1 to F12 or eject) the Caps Lock indicator disappears.
I have uninstalled the extension and reinstalled without effect.
I tried the beta Chrome extension. Same result.
Is it meant to do this?

@toasted: Definitely not! Weird. If you restart your Mac, does it work normally again?

Glad that restarting helped. Be sure to let us know if you experience any other strange behaviour!
