Feature request for 1Password: prompt us sporadically for master password

This is the best feature request that we could come up with for 1Password:

Now that MacBook Pros, iPhones, and iPads all use TouchID to authenticate 1Password, we are on the verge of completely forgetting our Master Password -- which has 50+ characters in it and is extremely complex.

We used to be able to remember our master password easily, because we were typing it into our Macs, our iPhones, and our iPads about a zillion times a day.

But now that we're unlocking everything with our fingerprints only, we haven't typed in our master password in over a year, and we are now on the verge of almost forgetting it.

What we feel would be the ideal solution for this would be if 1Password gave us a preference where we can force it to ask us for our master password "1 out of x" unlocking times.

So, for example, we could set 1Password to ask us for our Master Password every 1 out of 50 unlocking attempts, so we are continually reminding ourselves as to what our master password is.

This would make sure that we never forget our master password!

The iOS app Authy does this -- every X number of launches, it prompts us for our account password so that we don't forget it.

Thank you!

Hey @scotty321 -- excellent suggestion! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. Fortunately, our own 1Password for iOS app works much the same as you've described: you can visit Settings > Advanced > Security and choose any timeout you like, from every hour all the way up to Never. :)

On the Mac, it works much the same (though "Never" is not an option on your Mac like it is on iOS).

  • Hey, this is fantastic! I never noticed those options before! Thank you! :)

You're quite welcome, @scotty321! We work very hard to make 1Password NOT confusing or difficult to use, but there are enough options/features we must include that sometimes it's easy to miss one you're looking for. Which is why we're here - to point you in the right direction, if you need it. Glad we were able to help! :)

  • On Mac, that option is very easy to find... but I never even realized that the "Settings > Advanced > Security" section existed on iOS. I wonder if it makes more sense to move this option into the normal "Settings > Security" section on iOS. Would make it easier to find.

@scotty321 -- I agree it would seem logical to locate this setting in the general Security tab of 1Password for iOS. I'll pass along your recommendation to have it moved. In the meantime, at least now you know where it is! :)

  • Thank you so much!!! :)

@scotty321 - you're very welcome. The location of that particular preference has actually been the subject of some debate internally here -- there's a trade off between not making the existing Security tab too busy and intimidating by putting too many items there, and not wanting to have this one lone security-related item off by itself. Thanks for weighing in, and keep an eye on our updates. :)

Sweet, thanks! Perhaps WITHIN the existing security section, you guys can add an "Advanced" section right there. So at least all the security settings are still combined underneath the main security section, but it's also slightly hidden for people who don't consider themselves advanced.

@scotty321 - not a bad idea at all. I'll pass it along. :)
