New translucent side bar doesn't match Microsoft's acrylic design.

The new translucent side bar doesn't match Microsoft's acrylic design found in apps like Mail, Calendar and Groove and looks out of place compared to the rest of the OS.

Acrylic design guidelines can be found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/style/acrylic#acrylic-and-the-fluent-design-system

  • Hi @Faraquet,

    Thanks for the feedback!

These are the guidelines we will try to consider but it is not the guidelines that is designed for regular desktop programs.

Microsoft's Fluent Design System (Acrylic is part of it) assets is limited to Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. 1Password 6 isn't one, it's a regular desktop program. Until Microsoft ports that system to WPF that we use, we would have to replicate and draw the UI ourselves, which means it may never be the same, especially if Microsoft changes it all the time.

We can certainly try to match their Fluent Design System as much as we can and we are planning to do that but we have to consider that 1Password 6 runs on Windows 7, 8.1 and all versions of 10. For the moment, we're just trying to make sure the performance does not take a hit and runs well on all supported platforms. If this works out well, then we can proceed to start iterating the design further. If not, we will remove it and go in a different direction.

Also, 1Password window is now missing shadow which makes it looks a little weird when you look at other apps.

  • @revanmj: Thanks for the feedback! As Mike mentioned, the design is a bit of a work-in-progress since we do need to continue supporting older versions of Windows, but we'll definitely keep your thoughts in mind as we refine it further. :chuffed:

I have to say i noticed this too and would like to see it adopt but at the same time understand why this hasn't happened (at least for now).

  • Yea, it would've been nice if Microsoft made Fluent Design System available for regular desktop apps as well. It may not be possible to bring all desktop apps into the Microsoft Store but at the very least, we can try to make the apps more modern.
