Resize is causing 1P7 to hang [Caused by third party tool, Maxto]

As soon as I try to resize the main 1P window, it goes white and hangs until I kill it. This even happens on the lock screen. I haven't seen this mentioned so possibly it is related to my high-DPI screen? (laptop running at 3200x1800 with 200% windows scaling)

@tsaylor: Hmm. I haven't seen other reports of this, even on other large, high-res screens. I'm also not able to reproduce this, but one thing I notice is that resizing is a bit sluggish here. What's the position when you're trying to resize it? Is there any difference if you maximize or restore it? What GPU, driver version, and display management software are you using on your system?

Ok, I was able to track this down. At first I typed up a complete description of my GPU/driver and the exact behavior (which is actually not a hang but rather an invisible white/black window). But then I started looking at other apps I'm running and found what is causing the behavior: MaxTo, which supports custom maximize regions (https://maxto.net). And more specifically, it only happens when the "Window transparency" option is enabled. I haven't noticed this behavior with other apps so there may be some sort of interaction here.

  • Hi @tsaylor,

Is there a setting to exclude 1Password from Maxto’s features? If yes, that would be the best way to address this issue. You can also report this issue to Maxto’s development team, which I think you can do here: https://github.com/digitalcreations/MaxTo/issues

There are no app-specific settings there, but I think it's more an issue of how 1Password deals with its window being made transparent. As an experiment, I looked around and found a utility that does only that (making the current window have some transparency). I used this one: http://www.lukepaynesoftware.com/projects/peek-through, and it gave similar behavior when I added transparency to the 1P window.

So I do think this is technically a 1Password bug, although it likely wouldn't affect very many users so the priority would be low.

@tsaylor: Thanks for letting us know. Indeed, 1Password was using transparency a while ago, but that's gone in version 7 because there were some other issues with that. We'll see if there's anything we can do to improve things still, but it does sound like it's an issue with that software since it doesn't affect other users — or you — without it.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I've started having this same issue recently. I've been using 1Password 7 and MaxTo together without issue for a long time but sometime in the last month or two I've suddenly started having the 1Password window go completely white for me when I move or resize it while the window transparency option in MaxTo is enabled.

I can still aim in the top right corner and click to close 1Password and then reopen it from the taskbar icon to get it working in the location and at the size I set it to but it is an annoying extra step to go through to actually use 1Password again.

I've mentioned this to Digital Creations here in case it is on them: https://github.com/digitalcreations/MaxTo/issues/135

  • Hi @okand,

Thanks for letting us know. This will require an update from Digital Creations to fix or to blacklist 1Password in their tool by default.
