Direct item link (URLs)

I'd like a way to get a URL that points directly to an item and that resolves on any of the platforms 1P supports. Three very common use cases for me:

  • I want to point another member of my team to a specific item to use to log into something, as we frequently have multiple login items for each site that have different privileges, etc.

  • Bug reports and testing documentation should reference which of our dozens of test users were used.

  • I want to reference a particular 1P item in my personal notes or on my todo list.

The alternative in all these cases is to use tedious, error-prone references to vault and item names.

UI-wise, I'm basically looking for a place on the item view, probably in the share menu (as there is precedence for this, e.g., with Safari) that I can click and copy an item URL to the clipboard for pasting elsewhere.

Similar features exist for copying the page URL in Safari, comment links in JIRA and YouTrack, row links in OmniOutliner, message links in Mailplane, comment or post links ("permalinks") in WordPress, etc.

There was already another feature request for this on the iOS side:

https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/74868/url-scheme-for-specific-items-item-links

but I don't see a way to "vote" for that or some such, nor can I even add a supporting comment because it's closed. And as useful as this feature is on the personal side, I think it's even more useful on the teams/business side, which is why I'm posting it here.

Thank you.

  • Hi @BobW,

I think that'd be a very useful feature and I myself have found myself wanting such a thing.

We don't have public feature trackers for members to vote on because we find that it sets the wrong expectation. Just because a feature is most-voted doesn't mean it should be built; ideas need to fit within the vision for 1Password. We have ways of tracking interest for features internally, and that's part of the reason that you'll often see developers frequenting the forum. It's important for us to keep a pulse on what people are wanting.

It seems that now this is possible :) At least on iOS last beta app.

  • Yep; something we're looking at. No promises, but folks are welcome to try it out in the beta version. :)

This is fantastic! (The beta link sharing) - So much better than the previous method of copying the UUID from the Mac to use with onepassword://search/, which doesn't play all that nice with iOS (i.e. it brings up 1PW with the UUID search string filled out but says "Sorry, no results :frown:" until you switch away from All Vaults to a specific vault, and then back to All Vaults, which then makes your search result pop up).

One little tidbit I've noticed which I really appreciate, is that if I modify the shared link a tad by replacing the https://start.1password.com/open/i?a=.... at the beginning with the onepassword://open/i?a=.... app url scheme, 1PW launches and opens the shared item immediately without first opening my browser.

Any other functionality secrets the onepassword:// url scheme might be hiding?
I tried replacing /open/ with /edit/ hoping I could jump straight into Edit view when passing all the rest of the arguments from a shared item link with no luck. Same goes for just passing the contents of the &v=.... portion of the url (along with the &a= account section) hoping to be able to link directly to a specific vault rather than a specific item.

I would absolutely LOVE to be able to send new items directly to the app to be created, along the lines of
    onepassword://new/i?type=Login&un=myusername&pw=my%20pass&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gmail.com&v=Vault%20Name&a=mycompany.1password.com

I'm often creating and using complex iOS Shortcuts that will sometimes be generating credentials for certain internal systems via APIs, and at the moment the best I can do is have them copied to the iOS Clipboard to then be pasted into new 1PW entries. Besides actually having real 1PW Shortcuts integration (which would be AWESOME!), an accessible url scheme (ideally with x-callback-url support) would be the next best thing.

    Cheers!

  • Hi @imaldonado,

You should be able to jump into edit mode, at least on our Mac app:
    https://support.1password.com/integration-mac/

You're likely wondering why we both using https instead of just making links with onepassword://. There are two reasons for that:
    1. We don't want to assume that the recipient actually has an app installed.
    2. If you make a onepassword:// link, certain mail services like GMail, Yahoo, etc.. will strip the link. They only allow https links.

Eventually it'd be nice if our URL schemes were better standardized across our apps and included more actions like what you're proposing.
