I have had 1password for many years and like it. By accident i pressed subscription in appstore but immediately canceled it. I dont want to pay for the app and wonder if i have to pay now to keep using the app

No, you do not. If you went all the way through the account creation process you’ll want to follow these instructions to use 1Password standalone (sans-membership):

That said, there is a 30 day free trial of membership available. You may want to try it out. If not, double check that you’ve cancelled your subscription with Apple or they will bill you in 30 days:
