Difference between 1Password (2-3 yr old), 1Password 7, 1Password X and 1Password Membership?

I have had 1Password for 2 to 3 years (1Password Version 6.8.8 (688001) Mac App Store) on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. Now my wife went to download the latest and it's 1Password 7, I also see there is 1Password X and a 1Password Membership. What are the differences?

Welcome to the forum, @gvalentim! There are currently two ways to use 1Password:

    With a 1Password account:

    • You sign up for an account at the main 1Password  sign-up page.
    • Your subscription includes the 1Password apps across all platforms, with all updates and upgrades for as long as your account is active.
    • Once you sign in to your account in 1Password on a new device, all of your data is instantly available - no need to set up third-party sync.

    As a standalone product:

    • You purchase licenses for each platform separately.
    • These licenses include all in-version updates, but a major version upgrade (such as 1Password 7) may require a paid upgrade.
    • You create local 1Password vaults, and if you like, choose how to sync your data. You can set up sync using a third party service (like Dropbox or iCloud.) If you do not set up sync, your data will remain only on your device.

1Password accounts also include access to your data via a web browser, and per-item backups so you always have a safe copy of your data off of your devices, and can roll back to a previous version of an item if a change is accidentally made.

1Password X is a new type of browser extension that works differently than the one you're used to. In standalone 1Password (which is what you've been using previously), your data is all local on your device, and the browser extension works to allow the main 1Password app to fill in your data into web pages. 1Password X works only with 1password.com accounts, and it doesn't require a local app at all. Instead, it communicates directly with your data on the 1password.com server, so it can work anywhere you can install Chrome - including Linux, Solaris, and platforms where you previously could not use 1Password.

If both you and your wife are 1Password users, I'd strongly recommend a 1Password Families account for you, since it's by far the easiest way to share data between the two of you, and it will also be the most cost-effective approach. Let us know if you have any follow-up questions! :)
