2 really super awesome ideas for 1password!

  1. A dark theme for Windows? Have you guys used the Discord dark theme? Beautiful. 1Password should be beautiful too.
  2. As sugested here (https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/81936/suggestions-area#latest)

I was wondering if there was any news regarding the username suggestion/autofill? @bundtkate seemed keen!

  • Hi @Chaza218,

    Thanks for sharing your requests.

    A dark theme for Windows?

Yes, we absolutely want to do a dark theme, it's just not that easy or quick for us to adopt within the UI framework we're using. We're slowly rebuilding the entire interface to be more adaptable though; not just a dark theme but also a high-contrast theme as well. We already have a dark theme in the macOS version of 1Password, Apple made it easier to adopt support for the dark mode on the first day.

dropdown or autofill suggestion/ default username when creating a new login in a vault

It's also something we want to do but alas, also not a quick thing since in 1Password, we take every precautions to minimize what we decrypt in memory; it only decrypts one item at the time when you're viewing or editing or creating, not the entire database. To power this feature, we'd need to decrypt everything, copy commonly used usernames in a separate location and then hook it up. Then we need to make sure it is up to date over time as you may use different email addresses for something else like work. We love this idea as we're trying to add more machine learning technology within 1Password, so we do want to do this.

Could you have a separate list that is decrypted when making a new vault entry that contains the common username info? As it is not really very sensitive info in of itself.

Alternatively could you set a "default" username in the settings that it goes and fills?

    Thanks!

  • Hi @Chaza218,

Yes, that is what I meant by storing it a separate location (separate row/table in the internal database), so when you create a new item, we read that data to auto-populate the username.

The issue is decrypting all items to grab the usernames first and then copy the most common ones in the other list.

As it is not really very sensitive info in of itself.

Well, it is our policy to encrypt all metadata we can; leaking usernames can still be harmful as you can run it against all data breaches in the past and find out what sites you have access to as well as passwords you used but haven't updated yet.

Yep, that'd be easier but it'd still be a separate location that we need to create. We might as well add default username and also any other usernames you want to add in addition to capturing all usernames you had in the past, so auto-completion would work well.
