Hello,

I was reading the 1Password Security Handbook and I noticed that our Master Unlock Key is derived from our Master Password and our Secret Key (which is randomly generated on the device upon sign up and stored on the device). I was wondering if I was to access to 1Password from another device how is this key transferred over to that device? Is it then stored on the server encrypted? With which key is it encrypted then?

Thank you

  • Hi @brulex123

I'd be happy to help with that.

if I was to access to 1Password from another device how is this key transferred over to that device?

Manually, by you. :) You can use your Emergency Kit to do so:

Get to know your Emergency Kit

If you have iCloud Keychain enabled the Secret Key will also be synced via iCloud Keychain (and thus protected by your Apple ID credentials).

Is it then stored on the server encrypted?

Only the first chunk of the Secret Key, which is an identifier, is ever stored by us. We never have the whole thing.

Right, so say I use 1Password on my Mac and on my chrome browser on another computer I would have to manually insert it?

  • Yes. :)
