Integrate individual account into family account

Dear Team,

I have upgraded my individual account into a family account in order to have joint vaults with my girlfriend. She already has an existing individual account too. How can she cancel her individual subscription and integrate into the family account? She of course wants to keep her individual vault too.

Best
Julian

I think the most straightforward approach would be to sign both of her account's into the app and move all of her items from her Individual account vault to her Family account vault. She should print out a new Emergency Kit as it will change with the new account. https://support.1password.com/emergency-kit/

    Hey Thommy,

Thank you for your quick response.

The thing is, she doesnt want to transfer her vault into the family account vault. She wants to keep her private vault and have access to the shared vault - like I do now.

When I upgraded to the family account I invited her with the same mail she uses for her individual account already. But when she tries to join the family account she is requested to insert her personal data again, just as if she would be creating another account. That wont work with the same email account twice I guess. Isnt there another way to do this? Or in other words, if someone upgrades to a family account is it assumed that no family member already owns a 1password account?

I think you may be confusing vaults with accounts. To join your family membership your girlfriend will indeed need to create a new account. Within that account she'll have a Private vault, which she can (if desired) move the items from her existing Private vault (in her individual membership) into. Then she could delete the individual membership.

The hierarchy is that memberships contain accounts. Memberships also contain vaults. Accounts and vaults do not cross memberships. Accounts within memberships can access some or all of the vaults within that membership, except each Private vault can only be accessed by the account it is associated with.

    Does that make more sense?

Okay, that makes it clear. She will have to create a new account under the family umbrella and then transfer all the content from her vault to the new family vault. Will that work with the same email?

  • It will, yes. :)
