What exactly does 'Master Password' mean?

I can't sign in for the first time. My email address and secret key are correct.

I'm not dumb but I can't get started. Is it my old password or .. a new password?

Thanks, Mike

  • Hi @MikeMed

It depends. :) If you're logging in at https://my.1password.com/ then you're always going to use the Master Password associated with your account (chosen at the time of account creation; at least 10 characters). If instead you're trying to unlock the iOS app it could work a few different ways. The way unlocking 1Password works is:

    • If a Primary (standalone; non-account) vault exists 1Password will always unlock using the Master Password for that vault. This supersedes all of the following rules.
    • If a single 1Password.com account is logged in then 1Password will unlock using the Master Password for that account.
    • If multiple 1Password.com accounts are logged in then 1Password will unlock using the Master Password of the first account that was added.

If you are using a membership then we recommend removing any standalone vaults after transitioning their content to membership based vaults so as to avoid this confusion. If you can sign in at https://my.1password.com but not with the iOS app, then this is likely the problem. Please let me know what you find.

    Ben
