I have the 1PW app that sits in my dock and I have the extension which sits in the menu bar. Apparently those two don't talk to each other because if I have the app open and then go to a site where I need to put in a password and I hit shift+cmd+x I then have to enter my Master Password in the extension to unlock it.

Is this the way that it's designed or is there something I can do so that when one is unlocked, the other is too?

    Yes, that's correct. The Mac app and the 1Password X extension do not communicate with each other in your case. The feature you're looking for is called Desktop App Integration; that's where they communicate directly. It's in beta testing at the moment. Beta's are not everyone's cup of tea. If you are looking for a non-beta approach, you would disable 1Password X and install the companion app extension. Which will give you the integration you desire.

    If you are looking to keep 1Password X and move to the betas, you would need the beta Mac app and the 1Password X beta installed.

    @ag_tommy Is that this one?

    If so, what's the advantage of using this over 1 PW X extension - other than the communication? Or, put another way, what's the advantage of using 1 PW X over the companion app?

    The screenshot you provided is of the companion app extension.

    1Password X was originally designed for those users' who were unable to install the desktop application. So it works without the need for the desktop app.

    The main reason that I can think of is, I find the data filling logic a bit more cutting edge. The companion app extension is still great but for some of the trickier sites. I have 1Password X installed for use. I use both in my daily activities, 1Password X (work) and the Safari (personal), which uses the Companion App Extension.

    I happily move back and forth between the two and may not be a good indicator for choosing one or the other. Maybe one of these links will help make the choice easier for you.
