Basic Authentication / HTAccess / HTTP Auth [will work using Open and Fill in 1Password X]

I am an avid RoboForm user currently, but due to their interface/apps seeming to be slightly behind, I've purchased 1Password for a few of my clients. It works great for almost all sites, and it a bit more polished. However, for my personal use, I'm sad to say that it would appear that 1Password is still lacking what would seem to be a basic function (ok, pun intended) -- Basic Authentication.

While not a deal-breaker for most people, personally it prevents me from connecting to dozens of web services that I manage, namely:
1) Asterisk / FreePBX management portals
2) Secured Web folders
3) Several DVR systems' web interfaces
4) Many VoIP phone interfaces
5) Many Wireless Routers
6) Many Managed Network Switches
7) Many NAS Storage servers
8) Many Network IP cameras web interfaces
....and a handful of other items I'm not thinking of right now.

Unfortunately the sum of all of these devices in my current RoboForm vault is around 300-400. While the http://user:pass@host workaround may work in some instances, as a rule I prefer not to have my passwords visible -- even momentarily -- during the normal course of business.

RoboForm does have Basic Authentication working well in Safari and IE, as well as several secondary browsers.
Have I missed any announcement or plan to get this implemented since there does appear to be a method to do so? The posts I saw dated back several years with little news from 1Password on any progress.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but I wanted to express the reasoning behind my inquiry so it might make more sense... I understand that some users might never encounter Basic Auth in their day-to-day, while others are knee-deep in it.

Thanks for your time!
Josh

    Hey guys,
I know this has been brought up before, but I'm seeing that LastPass has support for this: https://lastpass.com/support.php?cmd=showfaq&id=275

1Pass is a great app, but basic auth dialog support in chrome would be a great win, and is apparently possible. I've seen a few extensions in the Google Play store as well that do this - is there something wrong with the method they use?

Anyways - thanks for the great app - would be nice to have this feature added, but I realize it's easy for me to sit here and say it's easy to add this feature -- appreciate the work guys!

Are you kidding guys, the same reply for years...
I am a very old user of 1P, I have it on all my devices, could you really consider using at least the available API in Google Chrome to make our life easier with Basic Auth, I am really fed up of copy/pasting those passwords !

Just to be complete, check this very simple free extension, that prove it works:
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/multipass-for-http-basic/enhldmjbphoeibbpdhmjkchohnidgnah

You may even use the code, it is open and available on GitHub.
    No more excuse guys !

  • Hi @stec‌,

I am terribly sorry this has not yet been implemented. I will personally make sure the developers hear about this.

The lack of basic auth support in 1Password is puzzling... you have so many advanced features and yet you lack this basic (hehe) one.

Roboform supports it in every browser... I get the feeling your coders are better than Roboform's - how about you challenge them to get this feature out by the end of this month?

The day you support basic auth, I will finally be able to buy and switch to 1Password and finally get rid of Roboform.

do you have a roadmap for a rough timeline when this is going to be implemented?

  • Hi @leonmax,

I've added your vote. We do not release details on any features until it is implemented and tested first. In this case, we don't have any timeframe.

It is one of our most requested features and we know there are APIs in Chrome and Firefox that allows extensions to work with Basic Auth but we haven't been able to get to it just yet.

Adding my vote for this feature request as well. My memory could be fuzzy, but I think there was a version of 1Password that supported this at one time?

Thanks for your vote and interest, @cwoodfield.

HTTP (basic) Authentication credentials can be stored in Apple's keychain and be usable at least with Safari, which may help. An older version of 1Password possibly supported it, although it could have been version 2 and not 3. My memory's also fuzzy about this. :)

Another +1. As a web developer I encounter HTTP Basic Auth frequently as we have new sites which are live but not launched as we make the final tweaks. We use Basic Auth just to keep basic prying eyes from stumbling on to something before it is fully ready to go. This is the single thing that makes me consider switching to LastPass as many of my colleagues have.

Thanks for your votes and feedback!

At the moment you can use 1Password mini to display site details and anchor the view so it stays on top of other windows. then copy/paste between 1Password mini and the site.
